Introduction:
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common severe congenital
abnormality in the newborn and is the cause of over half the deaths
from congenital anomalies in childhood. While certain pregnancies
are at greater risk for CHD, the majority of fetuses with cardiac
defects are from low risk pregnancies.
With
proper training, it is possible to detect as much as 90% of significant
CHD during an ultrasound screening examination performed between
17 and 24 weeks of gestation.
Objectives:
1. Improve the quality of your fetal cardiac imaging
2. Expand your Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the
normal and
abnormal fetal heart.
3. Increase your detection of fetal cardiac abnormalities.
Who should apply:
Those who perform or interpret obstetrical ultrasound, including
obstetricians, sonographers, sonologists, and maternal-fetal medicine
fellows. The curriculum is designed to meet the particular professional
needs of physicians or sonographers.
Program
Outline
This program is an intensive 4-day course on fetal echocardiography
techniques.
-
The participant will perform fetal echocardiograms under the
supervision of our Perinatal Cardiology Faculty. The examinations
will focus on incorporating outflow tract images and Doppler
techniques into the routine 4 chamber cardiac examination.
-
The participant will have the opportunity to view our extensive
video collection of fetal and pediatric anomalies and use our
Perinatal Cardiology Library.
-
An
entire day is spent in didactic lectures covering a variety
of subjects, including pulsed and color Doppler techniques,
and the diagnosis of arrhythmias. Correlation of video findings
with actual heart specimens is provided.
