Getting
a correct diagnosis is, most of the time, not all that difficult
anymore. Of course, you need to be seen by a Pediatric Cardiologist,
a pediatric physician specifically trained in this field. Physical
examination is often but not always very helpful. Echocardiography
(click) will give you quite exact information
after the 20th week of pregnancy. After the baby is born the echocardiogram
will almost always tell you "the full story". Occasionally
a heart catheter test is needed to evaluate the severity of the
problem and to find associated problems which may not readily be
detected by echocardiography. Chest x-rays and "EKGs"
(electro- cardiograms) are additional means to evaluate the heart.
